5 Ways to Keep in Shape for Rafting Season

While the rafting season may seem like a long way away, it is fast approaching. Before you know it summer will be here and it will be time to get the paddling! While we are all active people no matter the season, there are a few ways to make the transition from ski muscles to rafting muscles easier. Take advantage of the winter months by using these 5 ways to keep in shape for the rafting season from Colorado River Rentals.

  1. Believe it or not rafting is a full body activity. So, while you may not think skiing or snowboarding is helping you, it really is. By strengthening your lower body you will be able to develop a deeper and stronger paddle stroke.
  2. Rowing machines at the gym are another great way to keep your paddling muscles strong throughout the winter season.
  3. If looking for a creative way to stay in shape, consider getting a certification. Classes that give certifications, such as a WFR or SWR are very beneficial. They not only teach you how to stay calm and handle certain emergencies, but also provide physical conditioning.
  4. When getting into some rowdy whitewater, one can find themselves falling out of the raft. The most common way to prevent yourself from falling out is by doing an “atomic sit-up/crunch.” When rafting and seated in the proper position, feet wedged in the seat in front of you, and find yourself falling out of the raft, you should be able to do a crunch and prevent falling. Your feet will act as a lever and hold you in place.
  5. Colorado Mountain College, or CMC, have branches located throughout the state which offer various outdoor classes. CMC offers whitewater and kayak classes that teach proper paddling techniques and provide safety instruction.
