Kayak or Paddleboard?

Kayak or Paddleboard?

The choice is yours, but the popular water sport of kayaking is a pretty common activity while paddle boarding is new and popular on the scene. The appeal is that you can paddle board on almost any flat body of water. Anything with a fast current, high waves or white water is almost impossible on a paddleboard. Kayaks, however, can rock pretty much any body of water, flat or whitewater. Here are some of the advantages of each so you can decide for yourself: kayak or paddleboard?

  • A kayak is more stable, so capsizing is difficult but it is easy to fall off a SUP.
  • Kayaks are more durable and have no weak spots.
  • Kayaks have places for storage while paddling.
  • Kayaks are better for long distance traveling.
  • Kayaking is easier for beginners.
  • Kayaks are easier to fish from.
  • Kayaks are easier to paddle in while its windy.
  • Kayaks are more comfortable in general.
  • Kayaks can keep out some wind and keep you warmer.

  • It’s like walking on water and offers a fantastic view.
  • Our generation sits a ton already… standing makes it more healthy.
  • You get a full body workout.
  • Paddleboards are easier to transport (usually).
  • You can do many activities on the SUP.
  • It’s way easier to get back on a paddleboard than a kayak when you fall off.
  • You have the option to sit or stand on a SUP.
  • Paddleboards offer a better view for fishing since you can stand.
  • Anyone can do it!

I have listed the advantages of each craft. One doesn’t seem to be better than another, but I personally like to kayak more than SUP. SUP may be taking the outdoor recreation world by storm, but it isn’t a new concept of any kind. The Hawaiians have been using SUP for years and it is part of their history. You will always get a better workout on a SUP but there is more comfort in a kayak. Bottom line, both are very fun and each has their advantages and disadvantages. You should try each and see which one suits you best. For a classic ride, go with kayaking, but for a new experience get yourself on a SUP!
