Ullr Fest

Ullr Fest, a mountain party like no other, returns to Breckenridge on January 13th – 16th, 2016. The winter festivity started when, in 1963, some of Breckenridge’s Norwegian transplants brought their tradition of celebrating the Norse God of Snow, Ullr, to the Rockies. Back then locals would create 12 foot tall plywood cut-outs of Ullr, paint them, and put them on light posts around town. Those looking to enter Breckenridge without an Ullr costume during the festival were even fined as a way to build up funds for the next year’s Ullr Fest. Ullr has some pretty impressive lineage; his mother was the Grain Goddess Sif who happened to be married to the almighty Thunder God Thor. Cold-loving Ullr was a master hunter, archer, skater, and – surprise, surprise – skier. The Ullr Fest is also the site in which the world’s longest shot-ski took place in 2013 consisting of 192 shots consumed in unison using 60 skis! Before you down your shot-ski, dedicate a cheers to Ullr for bringing us the fluffy white stuff. Be sure to wear a horned Viking hat while you play on the mountain and have a blast at Breckenridge’s biggest party of the year!

Grab a pair of ice skate rentals, head over to the Stephen C. West Ice Arena, and join in the fun at the Ullr Ice Skating Party. When you’ve built up an appetite go sip on beer and munch on appetizers while you watch the crowning of the Ullr King and Queen. Dress up in your best Ullr ensemble for the Ullr parade on Main Street Breckenridge and score candy the wild floats throw at the crowd, check out other crazy costumes, and follow it up by staying warm next to the massive bonfire in the South Gondola Parking Lot.
