Our Favorite Fall Camping in Colorado

Fall in Colorado is a great time to pack up the car and head out for an evening or two under the stars. With a great abundance of camping hot spots, Colorado often makes it tough to narrow it down and pick a spot for your outdoor adventure. To make it a little easier, here are our favorite spots for fall camping in Colorado.

Saddlehorn Campground | COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT, FRUITAindependence-rock-541869_1280

The Saddlehorn Campground is the only campground located within the Colorado National Monument. Sleep among Colorado’s beautiful red rock at the Saddlehorn Campground. This campground is open year-round and can be found near Fruita, CO. Campsites are equipped with picnic tables, charcoal grills, parking area, and access to the restrooms. They also allow backcountry camping with a permit that can be obtained for free at the visitor center.

Crystal Lakes | TEN MILE RANGE, BRECKENRIDGE

Take your adventure to the next level with beautiful hike-to camping spot. Lower Crystal Lake, about 2.4 miles from the trailhead, is accessible by vehicles equipped with 4-wheel-drive, but we suggest hiking to completely immerse yourself in the beauty of the landscape. Upper Crystal Lake, about 4.3 miles from the trailhead, is only accessible on foot, but the challenging hike is riddled incredible wildlife viewing, such as marmot, ptarmigan, mountain goat and bighorn sheep. Just remember that in the White River National Forest you are not allowed to camp within 100 feet of a lake or stream and your group can not exceed 15 people. Be very cognizant campfires restrictions enforced seasonally, and always keep permitted fires ¼ mile away from trees and 100 feet from the lakes and streams.

Chatfield State Park | CHATFIELD STATE PARK, LITTLETONcamping-691424_1280

This camping hot spot is found just outside of metro Denver, making it a very popular fall weekend getaway campground. Chatfield is home to a beautiful reservoir, popular among water skiers, fishers, sailors, kayakers and canoeists alike. All of the campsites are within walking distance of the lake and are outfitted with picnic tables and grills. The facilities on the grounds include toilets, hot showers, laundry, water, firewood and a waste station. Of the 197 campsites in Chatfield, 120 provide campers with full hook-up, including water, sewer and electricity. The remaining 77 campsites provide electricity. The park is also home to a floating restaurant and marina, where campers can rent boats and enjoy some great grub on the water!
