10 Tips for Staying Safe On the River

Here at AVA, safety is our number one priority and we are sure to make that known. There is always an inherent danger when entering the waters of Mother Nature, but there are many ways to stay safe and still have fun. Whether you’re taking a casual float trip or ripping the crazy rapids of Gore Canyon there are still fundamental safety measures to take each and every time you’re on the water. Below you’ll find a list of ten tips for staying safe while out on the water!

Wear a proper fitting life jacket – This is the bread and butter of whitewater safety. PFDs (personal flotation devices) are instrumental to safety. If you go in the water, you need to make sure you’re going to stay above  it. Also, if you need to be pulled back in the boat, we need that vest to be snug so we can pull you out by it without it slipping off.pfd

Scout your path – There are many hidden dangers in the water. Be sure to be aware of what is approaching. Our guides know the water well, so they’ll take the best route possible. Also, be sure to check the water flows before you depart on your adventure. Water flows can change daily, which can hide or expose certain features in the water. Knowing what the water is running at is imperative to having a successful trip.

Allow the boat ahead of you to finish the rapid before you start it – This is somewhat of a no brainer, but when entering a rapid you’ll need all the space you can get. If there’s a traffic jam of boats on a rapid, there’s a higher chance of  your boat flipping and other problems arising.

Know your limits – If you don’t know how to swim or if you’re uncomfortable on the water then start small. No need to overextend yourself trying to be macho. Find the right trip for you and you’ll be guaranteed to have a great time.

Wear a helmet – Just like riding a bike or skiing on the mountain, a helmet is crucial to protecting your noggin. You never know what’s in the water so it’s always a good idea to keep you safe.sweet helemet

Wear the right footwear – We don’t allow crocs or flip flops on our trips. We need you wearing shoes that are secure on your feet and won’t fly off, Tevas, Chacos, water shoes, and sneakers are all acceptable.

Never boat alone – If you’re going on a private boat trip, don’t go alone. The buddy system works well and allows you to look out for your friend and they for you while you go down the river.

Keep calm – This is especially important if you go swimming. The water is going to be cold and that can hinder your ability to make good choices. When you come out of the water, take a deep breath and decide your exit strategy.

Stay sober – Whitewater and mind altering substances do not mix. Alcohol and other drugs impair your ability to drive and do other activities. When you’re on the water, a clear mind and decision making abilities are imperative to having a fun and safe time.

No matter your choice of adventure, rock climbing, rafting, ziplining, there are a few essential safety tips to follow to ensure a safe and fun adventure. By no means is this a comprehensive list of everything you need to know, but following the tips above can greatly improve your time on the water.
