7 Tips for Planning an August River Trip

August is a great month to raft. Get out there in the summer heat and cool off when you get doused with that cool Colorado water! Unlike the early season of rafting, water levels are not as high and the air temperature is not nearly as low. With that being said, you should be conscious these !

1068 1. Know which trip is right for you – Our age minimums have changed slightly, so when you speak with one of our representatives, be  sure to tell us how old everyone in your family is. That way we can do everything in our power to get you set up on the best trip  possible. For example, we now will take five year olds on our Gold Rush trip out of Idaho Springs on Clear Creek! We want to give you  the most enjoyable and memorable experience possible, so the more information you give us, the better.

 2. Bring sunscreen – The August sun is high in the sky and it is hot! Be sure to bring sunscreen, especially if you have fair skin that  burns easily.

3. Keep your eyes protected – Bring some sunglasses that will stay attached to your head. If you have a pair of croakies then you are all set, ot1-70herwise you can scoop up a pair at our outpost. They ensure that your sunglasses won’t fall into the water and become property of the river.

4. Check the traffic report! – Summer in Colorado is construction season,  so be sure to check the traffic conditions before your trip. With the I-70 tunnel blast going on, there is always a possibility that you may get stuck for a half hour waiting for the tunnel blasting to clear.

5. Wear shoes that won’t fall off your feet – We need you to have a good grip in the footholds, so shoes that won’t come off are pertinent to rafting. If you’re about to hit a serious wave, we want to make sure that you’re locked in tight. We are ok with velcro sandals such as Teva’s, Chacos, old sneakers, water shoes, and other secure footwear. Please, no flip flops or Crocs!

6. Avoid cotton – We supply wetsuits, so wear something underneath that will dry in the open air. Don’t wear a t-shirt because you will be very cold. Cotton doesn’t wick moisture away so it will lower your body temperature and make you chilly. If you want to wear some sort of top, wear something synthetic like Under Armour. This will  ensure that moisture is wicked away from your skin and allow you to have a much more enjoyable time!raftingggg 002

 7. Don’t be afraid to  try something new! Seriously, push your boundaries! If you’re on the edge on whether or not to do  beginner or intermediate,  try the intermediate! We want you to feel comfortable, but if there was ever a time to try a  trip that’s a bit more difficult, it’s  now!
