Top 4 Fall Camping Spots

Colorado’s Rocky Mountains are known for their breath taking fall foliage come late September.  Many tourists and locals alike enjoy camping this time of year for the unmatchable experience and impeccable views.  If you are looking for a great location to spend a night or two in the crisp fall air, consider these top four fall camping spots:

fly fishingBassam Guardstation and Cabin: This stand alone cabin in Buena Vista is a hidden treasure nestled within the aspen forests at the base of the collegiate peaks.  For $50/night, guests can enjoy their remote surroundings with the conveniences of a propane stove for cooking, potbelly stove for warmth, and a hammock to relax in beneath the trees.  With the Arkansas River just a short walk away, be sure to bring your fishing poles, waders, and fish fry appetite.

Cottonwood Pass:  This pass connects Buena Vista with the town of Almont on the other side of the divide.  The general area allows everything from free tent camping to electric sites complete with all the car camping amenities.  The pass sits in the valley of majestic Mt. Princeton and allows for great sightseeing and close proximity to horseback riding, whitewater rafting, fishing, and boating.

shapeVasquez Ridge:  Located near Winter Park, Vasquez Ridge sits above the awe-inspiring fall foliage the area is known for.  Though campsites are limited, many sit empty as this is an area unknown to most tourists.  The unique space offers off-roading trails, hiking, and fishing all within a short drive to town.

Guanella Pass:  Sitting just 12 miles outside of historic Georgetown and at 11,669 ft., campsites in this area are highly coveted in the fall.  Nearby Mt. Bierstadt offers a chance to hike one of Colorado’s easier 14ers.  Also located in the area are train rides through the canyon, whitewater rafting, ATVing, fishing, and historic gold mine tours.
