Top Put-Ins and Take-Outs on the Upper Colorado River
The Upper Colorado River is a majestic place to spend a day, or few, with family and friends. It’s a flowing sanctuary to escape the worries and problems of the city. While on the river there are ample opportunities to see American Bald Eagles, deer, and many other forms of mountain wildlife. You can also swim in the cool water, soak in the natural riverside hot springs, or cliff jump if you are daring enough. After you pick up all the essential gear from Colorado River Rentals, all you need to do is know where to put on and take off the river and you will be all set. Here is a description of the top put-ins and take-outs on the Upper Colorado.
The most popular section of the river is the 4.5 miles from Pumphouse Recreation Area to Radium. This is a class II-III section of beginner whitewater flowing through the scenic Little Gore Canyon. There is only one notable rapid, Needle’s Eye, which is a large rock in the center of the river that is easy to avoid. The rest of this section is gently flowing water with a few riffles here and there. The Radium Hot Springs are on this section as well as jump rock, which are both popular stops for locals and raft companies alike.
The next section flows from Radium to Rancho del Rio. This section is about 6.5 miles and also consists of mostly class II, with one class III, Yarmony. Rancho del Rio is a private take-out that is available to the public for a small fee.
The last section that is popular with locals is Ranco del Rio to State Bridge. It is all class II beginner whitewater. The take-out at State Bridge is also a popular music venue with nightly shows right on the river.
You can also choose to run the entire Upper Colorado from Pumphouse to State Bridge as a full day float and enjoy all the river has to offer.
